Today marks the first day of the Year of the Dragon which is considered to be the luckiest year in the Chinese Zodiac. The Dragon symbolizes good fortune in the areas of health and wealth as well as a long, prosperous life.
To celebrate, we started the day with an opening ceremony and traditional Chinese New Year Lion Dance which took place in front of the Haida Gwaii, Spirit of the Jade Canoe. The Lion Dance moved its way through the terminals, visiting our business partners and exchanging heads of lettuce for red envelopes.
The party wasn’t just before security though. The International Terminal was awash with red and gold decorations after security and passengers gathered around for photos with the hanging banners and bamboo archways.
Aldeasa, YVR’s duty free operator, got into the spirit and offered passengers red envelopes filled with chocolate coins. For a limited time, passengers have access to limited edition New Year products such as Swarovski crystal dragons, fragrances and candy.

Gung Hay Fat Choy! We wish everyone a happy and prosperous Lunar New Year and 2012!
What do the sport of curling and keeping an airport safe have in common? Hint: It’s nothing to do with brightly coloured pants.
But it does has everything to do with brooms and sweepers! We’re not talking about someone running around the airfield with a broom though – we’re talking about the OshKosh Sweeper, a high powered snow clearing machine.

Keeping the runways and aprons at YVR clean and clear during snowstorms is a big job. Whenever it snows at YVR, we can deploy an army of up to 80 trucks and machines to de-ice, blow, plow, melt and sweep allowing aircraft to safely take off and land.
This isn’t your grandma’s curling broom; we use a 475hp, 22 foot wide broom to clear up to 5,000 tonnes of snow an hour.
Here’s a fun fact: In 2009, we held a community contest to find a name for our new sweeper as many of our airfield trucks have names. The winning name was Sweep Lightning and is now displayed on the side of the truck.

Because the Lower Mainland only gets a few days of snow a year, chances are you haven’t invested in a snow blower for your house. But when you need one – you really need and want one.
Here at YVR, when it snows it’s important that we keep the airfield safe and secure for both aircraft and passengers, so we invested in not just one blower but four snow blowers. The OshKosh H-Series Snow Blowers are just four of the 80 pieces of machinery used to clear our five square kilometres of runways, aprons and pavement during a major snow storm.
However, this isn’t your everyday residential snow blower. This powerful machine is capable of blowing up to 5,000 tonnes of snow an hour as far as 150 feet away using a 600 horsepower blower.
