This week, we kicked off a cool new program called B.C. Communities Showcase to show off our great province when the world arrives for the 2010 Winter Games.
We’re giving 15 communities across B.C. $10,000 to create an original three-minute video that celebrates what makes their little corner of the province so fantastic.
Between October and the end of the Paralympic Games in March, these 15 mini films will be shown on some of the airport’s large screens, and here online at YVRConnections.com.
Over the next four weeks, our team will be visiting the 15 communities to announce the program and present the cheques, including:
- Campbell River
- Castlegar
- Cranbrook
- Fort St. John
- Kamloops
- Kelowna
- Nanaimo
- Penticton
- Port Hardy
- Prince George
- Prince Rupert
- Terrace
- Tofino
- Victoria
- Williams Lake
It’s up to the local spirit of B.C. Committees in each community to decide who will play fi
lmmaker, and what they want to profile about their region – whether it’s Okanagan wine country, sport fishing in Terrace, or surfing in Tofino. So get out that director’s chair.
We can’t wait to see the results. Check back here for program updates and to see the videos later this summer.

I’m part of Tourism Saltspring Island. Is there any way we can join this initiative?? We didn’t know about it earlier.
Thanks,
Nora
Thanks, Nora. The 15 communities were selected because each has direct flights to and from YVR. We also tried to pick communities across the province so that different regions were represented – e.g. Northern B.C., Interior, Vancouver Island, etc. We would have loved to extend the program to many more communities but for a first-time program, we thought 15 communities was a good start.

Good Morning,
I am the manager of Shuswap Tourism and work for the Columbia Shuswap Regional District. Our region of BC is from just outside of Chase to the Alberta border. We cover 30,107 square kilometers of BC. I also am disappointed that we were not notified of this initiative as it leaves out a large spectacular part of BC. The Shuswap/Columbia region is only a one hour drive from Kelowna and Kamloops and these communities are both connections to tourists visiting our region. We have many visitors from Asia, Europe, Australia visiting our region each year that fly into Vancouver with connections to Kelowna and Kamloops. I appreciate that you only have funding for 15 communities but in the future it would be great if all regions of BC could be represented. Thank you Robyn Cyr
We already have a wonderful video of our area which takes in the Shuswap Lakes and surrounding country side adjacent to our quaint little Village of Chase. We would be thrilled to have our video shown and we wouldn’t need the grant money. Please let us know if we can have our video shown even if we don’t qualify for a grant. This is a great opportunity for our Province to shine and what better place to greet the people but at the Vancouver Airport.
Hi Sue, thanks for your post. What I suggest is that you contact the Kamloops 2010 Spirit of BC Community Committee, which is coordinating video production for your region of the province. Perhaps they can put your footage to use. I’ll send you an email with contact info for the committee.
Cheers,
kate
I’m a videographer located in the East and West Kootenay region. This sounds like a project we would be interested in being a part of. How do we find out who the contact people are in Castlegar and Cranbrook to see if we can be involved?
Hi Dan, thanks for your interest in the program. Your best bet would be to connect with the Spirit of B.C. Community Committees in both Castlegar and Cranbrook – they’re responsible for pulling the videos together. You can use the search function on the Spirit of BC website to find the right contacts.
Cheers,
kate
